Pac-12 on the horizon?

February 10th, 2010, 1:48 am by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

There has been speculation about two new members of the Pac-10 for a long time now. I remember when they were supposed to be Texas and Texas A&M, when the old Southwest Conference was breaking up.

New commissioner Larry Scott, a marketing guy who says “going forward” a lot, seems receptive to the idea of a Pac-12.

And Channel 4 in Salt Lake City thinks the extra pair will be Utah and Colorado. No Brigham Young.

UCLA basketball: Reeves cleared to practice*

February 9th, 2010, 6:38 pm by Al Balderas, staff writer

Freshman forward Reeves Nelson was cleared to practice prior to Tuesday’s team workout but only in non-contact drills.

Nelson suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s loss to Cal but wasn’t diagnosed with the injury until after the contest.

Nelson will be limited to non-contact drills through Wednesday.

The injury could keep Nelson out of Sunday’s game at USC but he doesn’t see that happening.

“I’m definitely going to play no matter what,” he said Tuesday afternoon.

“Heyyyyyy! We’re in like Flynn!”

Christmas Day at UCLA was (unofficially) Feb. 3. And Rick Neuheisel was the biggest kid in the room.

Here’s a behind-the scenes video following the UCLA coach on signing day, as the Bruins were filled with good news and surprise.

UCLA basketball: Bruins return to practice today

February 9th, 2010, 10:22 am by Al Balderas, staff writer

The UCLA men’s basketball team is scheduled to return to practice today (after taking Sunday and Monday off) but will freshman forward Reeves Nelson participate?

Nelson suffered a concussion in the early part of last Saturday’s loss to Cal but continued to play anyway. He wasn’t diagnosed with the consussion until after the game.

Though he was on day-to-day status, I’m hoping to get some sort of an update later today when the media meets with coach Ben Howland.

UCLA basketball: O’Bannon lawsuit moves forward

February 8th, 2010, 11:06 pm by Al Balderas, staff writer

A federal judge allowed a lawsuit, filed by former UCLA star Ed O’Bannon against the NCAA, to proceed.

O’Bannon alleged that the NCAA used the images of various student-athletes without permission.

The NCAA tried to have the lawsuit dismissed, claiming that student-athletes signed a form permitting the organization to use their images to promote NCAA activities. The NCAA stipulated that in doing so, the student-athletes gave up their commercial rights.

U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken didn’t offer a ruling on the case but said the matter deserved further hearing.

O’Bannon alleges that the NCAA is making a profit by using the images to sell DVDs, video games and apparel.

The difference between a Bruin and a Trojan

February 8th, 2010, 4:01 pm by Adam Maya, staff writer since 2006

Neuheisel vs. Kiffin is officially underway. And, in case you missed it, new USC coach Lane Kiffin threw the first punch.

UCLA and USC went head-to-head for the signatures of several recruits last week, faring pretty even among those who were undecided going into signing day.

Afterward, the often brazen Kiffin suggested there is a fundamental difference between those who pick USC and those who pick UCLA.

“We know within the first 10 minutes whether they’re the type of guys that want to play here or there,” Kiffin said. “It’s a feeling that I have being around it and doing it for years. Without being specific, it’s the questions that they ask.

“We want guys that want to come here to be great, want to play with great players. We don’t want the guys that come in and ask, ‘How much am I going to get to play?’”

Hmm, so which guys did Kiffin say end up at USC?

“Very tough competitors, guys that want to come play with the best, guys that aren’t worried about depth charts or playing time,” he said. “They want to win championships. They want to do it with great players.”

UCLA basketball: Nelson suffers concussion in loss to Cal

February 6th, 2010, 4:01 pm by Al Balderas, staff writer

Reeves Nelson played most of Saturday’s game against Cal with a concussion.

The freshman forward was injured when he and Cal’s Markhuri Sanders-Frison bumped heads early in the first half.

“The doctor said it was a concussion so I’m going to be out a few days,” Nelson said after a postgame examination. Read the rest of this entry »

UCLA basketball: Cal 72, Bruins 58

February 6th, 2010, 3:06 pm by Al Balderas, staff writer

UCLA’s visit to first place in the Pac-10 conference didn’t last very long.

The Bruins, winners of four of their previous five games, picked their rematch with Cal to lay their latest egg.

UCLA led Cal by 14 points in the first half but found a way to drop a 72-58 decision, Saturday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion.

The loss dropped the Bruins back into second place in the conference, with eight games remaining. Five of those games will be on the road, starting with next Sunday’s game at USC. Read the rest of this entry »
