UCLA football: DeWayne Walker + 2009 = head coach?

November 26th, 2008, 7:30 am · 3 Comments · posted by Adam Maya, staff writer since 2006

UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker said he is ready to become a college head coach. He’s still waiting to see who is ready for him.

“I’ve been around enough head coaches, I feel I can run a program,” he said. “These BCS schools, sometimes their looking for more experienced coaches and guys that have done it before. I’m not in that category.

“If they’re not calling you, they’re calling somebody else. Until these guys become serious or want to have formal conversations, it is what it is. I’m happy where I’m at.”

Walker has recently spoken with Utah State and New Mexico State about their vacancies. The 20-year coach’s only interview with a BCS school, though, was a year ago with UCLA. He signed a two-year deal to stay with the Bruins after Rick Neuheisel was hired.

Walker acknowledged openings at Washington, Syracuse and San Diego State are intriguing.

“I think you have to entertain it,” he said. “You want to make sure you have the resources to be successful. That’s the beauty of my situation here. I have a good job. I think Rick is getting ready to take this thing to the next level.

“I feel a part of this. You don’t just walk away from this situation for anything.”

I don’t blame Walker for wanting to get out of UCLA. What an ugly game they just had against ASU too. It can’t be blamed on the defense though. Those guys were rarely on the field. ASU doesn’t have that much of a defense. I wonder how many points USC’s defense will score off of Kevin Craft’s arm? Nice of him to make sure Ricky won’t be going bowling. Now it won’t matter what happens in the USC game.

Doesn’t sound as if he is “wanting to get out of UCLA” just yet. But if he is really smart, which we all know he is, he will wait until Nueheisel DOES “take this thing to the next level”, Walker will make more money and land a better job when it happens. He’s no dummy!

I think it is very telling that Walker agreed to only a 2-year contract w/ UCLA. It looks like he wanted only to be tied down by UCLA for 2 more years such that if opportunities arise in 2009, the interested (likely non-BCS) school won’t be burdened by the potential buy-out.
